CPR on dog after he chocked on baseballs

June 29th, 2006

Happy Balls Baseball with Cap Antenna TopperWhen Jack the dog ran into trouble last month, he couldn’t have had a better man around to help. Physician Dave Karli and his dog were out for a walk near their home in Edwards while a father and son were playing catch with a baseball nearby. Jack, a Weimaraner mix, went to get some baseballs on the ground and tried to get several in his mouth.

One went down his throat and got stuck in his airway. Karli said he reached his hand down Jack’s throat and was able to remove the ball. He was bitten in the process.

After the ball was removed, Jack remained passed out. Karli did CPR on his dog for about 15 to 20 seconds until Jack regained consciousness.

Chris Roth, a veterinarian at Eagle-Vail Animal Hospital, said he doesn’t see a lot of owners having to do CPR on their dogs.

“Not a lot,” he said. “But, obviously, it can happen.” - Thanks for that doctor-y quote Mr. Roth, thanks a lot. Good to hear the scared dog survived it all, let’s hope he didn’t bit his rescuer too hard.

Do cats see in color?

June 27th, 2006

VBOX COMMUNICATIONS AMP0837 Cats Eye USB HDTV Starter Kit w/ BeyondTV & RemoteKeeping in mind that your cat evolved from hunters, you can understand why his sense of sight is one of his strongest. But cats are generally considered colorblind.

The retina, the nerve center at the back of the eye, contains cells called cones (responsible for converting light into color) and rods (responsible for black and white). In cats, rods greatly outnumber cones.

Theoretically, color perception is possible since the eye contains some cones, but distinguishing color isn’t necessary for cats. Brightness is far more important. He can see in the dimmest of lights; his eyes can open about three times as wide as the human pupil and let in as much light as possible at the normal “hunting” times of dawn and dusk.

Because of the differences between human and cat retinas, the animals can see using one-sixth of the amount of light people need: At night, for example, objects appear six times brighter to a cat than they do to humans, which helps the animals hunt. In addition to better brightness vision, cats can also detect minute movement, which is easily missed by people - another benefit for a hunter.

June 20th, 2006

DOGGIE DONE IT! - FAKE DOG POOPIn America almost half of North Carolina dog owners let the chips fall where they may and don’t clean up after their animals, according to a statewide survey of how people handle their dogs’ waste.

“It’s a big water-quality problem,” said Chrystal Bartlett, the state’s stormwater awareness and outreach coordinator. “It’s also an aesthetic problem.”

The state’s 1.8 million dogs deposit an estimated 681 tons of waste per day in the state, said Bartlett, who works for the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Chris Gonzalez, owner of Poop Away, said he has hauled away as much as 27 gallons of waste from a single yard. He hopes to expand his business from individual homes to subdivisions and apartments.

The survey conducted last year by the state and East Carolina University’s Center for Survey Research found that:
* People in the 35-54 age group are least likely to scoop the poop.
* Women are more likely than men to clean up after their dogs.
* Those who never or rarely pick up what their dogs leave behind were tallied at 59% in rural areas, 49% in the suburbs and 47% in cities.
