Greyhounds get support from Pamela Anderson

July 26th, 2006

pamela anderson dog marriagePamela Anderson has might’ve read about the recent greyhound dog killings, because she wants to save the greyhounds of the world from the “cruel” world of racing.

The former Baywatch star, an ardent animal rights campaigner, has lashed out at the industry over their barbaric treatment of the dogs. In a furious rant on her official website, pamelaanderson.com, she attacks both breeders and trainers for making greyhounds’ lives a misery.

She angrily writes: “I can’t believe I still read about such ignorant blatant cruelty. Thousands of greyhounds are killed each year as the declining dog-racing industry struggles to stay alive. Some puppies are killed in the name of “selective breeding” before they ever touch a racetrack.

Dogs who do qualify to become racers typically live in cages, are kept muzzled by their trainers at all times and are forced to race in extreme conditions, ranging from subzero temperatures to sweltering heat of more than 100°F/38°C.

10 Excuses for your dog’s bad behavior

July 25th, 2006

Manners for the Modern DogHere’s a list of excuses you can make for your dog’s embarrassing behavior during those uncomfortable, red-faced moments. Personally I think this must be a joke, because almost every reaction given will make the situation worse or is just a lame excuse, but as light-hearted joke responses they are funny.

1. Your dog sniffs at your visitor’s crotch.
a. He’s getting so old. He meant to jump up and lick your face but he forgot to jump up.
b. I’m having him trained to search for bombs.

2. Your dog steals the roast beef off the counter.
a. I guess he was tired of waiting for us to stop chatting.
b. There must have been something wrong with the meat. He eats anything questionable so we don’t get sick. (Funny, it is usually the meaty main course.)
c. Hmm, I thought that beef may have been a little “ripe” anyway – just as well.

3. Your dog gets out of the yard and tears up your neighbor’s garden.
a. He’s already caught three groundhogs over there!
b. Oh, no! Spot wouldn’t do that.
c. He must really feel at home in your yard.

What goes around, comes around

July 24th, 2006

Smoked Salmon Hot Dogs, Mild and SpicyThis is the cautionary tale of a Chinese man who ate dogs. A Chinese headmaster, who tried to buy off colleagues by cooking dog meat for them after secretly selling off trees around the school, ended up setting fire to classrooms when the meal burst into flames, a Chinese newspaper said Friday.

Ten classrooms containing televisions, computers, printers and textbooks burned down, leaving nearly 100 children unable to go to school, the Beijing Youth Daily said.

The headmaster, in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, sold off a 1,000-tree arboretum surrounding the school on the sly, the newspaper said.

German shepherd helps save toddler from roof

July 21st, 2006

Raising Puppies & Kids Together: A Guide for ParentsPhillip Redmond Jr., who will be 2 years old next month, apparently climbed out of a broken bedroom window Sunday and scampered across the narrow porch rooftops of at least eight homes, neighbors said.

The row homes have connected porch roofs; neighbors heard barking and saw the boy running from roof to roof followed by the family’s German shepherd, Alfie.

“He was following the baby across,” neighbor Tina Mitchell said. “He was protecting the baby, making sure the baby was all right.”

A neighbor, Shavyonn Robinson, was able to grab the toddler from the porch roof of a home a few doors down. The footprints of Phillip and Alfie could be seen in the blacktop coating on the porch roofs.

“First I had my hand sticking out (of the window) trying to grab him,” she said. “That’s when he tried to run past, because he thought I was playing with him, and he almost fell so I had to go out and get him.”

Police questioned the toddler’s parents, Phillip Redmond and Katie Berkelback, but no charges have been filed. Child welfare officials placed the boy in the care of relatives while the incident is investigated, said the boy’s father, adding that he was embarrassed but grateful that his son was fine.

“It was my fault,” he said. “I didn’t think he could get out there.”
